‘What Face Wednesday’ No.10

Welcome to the tenth ‘What Face Wednesday’ metal typeface identification competition! This week’s prize is a choice of any two hand-printed letterpress greeting cards (including free International p&p) from the selection on my  Typoretum website.

This week I am looking for the name of the typeface and the typefoundry that first cast the typeface (in metal). Please  email your answers to me; all correct answers will be placed in a hat and one winner will be randomly drawn.

Congratulations to the winner of this weeks’ competition, Ben Brundell, who correctly answered both questions. The typeface is Studio, designed by A. Overbeek and introduced by Typefoundry Amsterdam in 1946. The bold variant is often called Flambard.

Okay, with 4 minutes to go, can I suggest Studio issued by AFT. My recollection is of a European face issued in the late 1950s, early 1960s and featured in the British Printer. The AFT moniker could be simply the American distributor.

With even less time to go, I’ll propose that ATF in this case stands for Amsterdam Type Foundry and for a bonus point throw in that it was designed by A. Overbeek.
