‘Hot and off the press’ Financial Times letterpress article

Saturday’s issue of the Financial Times (21st November 2009) featured an article exploring the renaissance of letterpress printing for greeting cards and social stationery. Nestled amongst advertisements for exquisite jewellery could be found a photograph showing a display of dusty old typecases and selection of letterpress printed greeting cards, that included one of my own [...]

Letterpress Exchange Group bundle – August 2009

The 51st bundle of the  Letterpress Exchange Group (LEG) arrived recently and, as always, the package contained a wonderfully eclectic collection of beautifully executed letterpress work. With great difficulty, I have selected my favourite pieces from the August bundle and have posted them here, for your enjoyment.
Mike Edwards contributed a booklet that features a collection [...]

We are delighted to be exhibiting at this year’s Whittington Summer Show, on the afternoon of Saturday 5th September. ‘Advice for the Road’ letterpress poster by Bradley Hotson

Using a quote from the film An American Werewolf in London as inspiration, Bradley visited the  Typoretum recently and set about typesetting and printing a handful of woodletter posters. The Gill Sans Condensed woodletter was printed in dense black ink on my hand-operated 1960s Farley 24a proofing press. The moon image was achieved by taking [...]

New letterpress poster by The Occasional Print Club

The second meeting of The Occasional Print Club (OPC) took place at  JMG – the letterpress studio of  Jonathan Kielty and  Ross Shaw – last weekend and we produced a collaborative experimental letterpress poster, based upon F.W. Goudy’s famous ‘I am type’ quotation. This poster was printed, in three colours, on a Stephenson Blake proofing [...]

Kerning in letterpress typesetting

Apologies for the absence of new posts on my blog recently but I have had my shirt sleeves permanently rolled up whilst out in my letterpress workshop (the ‘Typoretum’), working on many and varied bespoke printing projects.
One of these recent projects involved typesetting a wedding invitation in Garamond Italic with swash capitals and alternate terminal [...]

New North Press – Wilton’s 150th Anniversary poster

Richard Ardagh of  Elephants Graveyard directed me to this delightful short movie showing him printing – ably assisted by Graham Bignell of  New North Press – some letterpress posters, on an Albion Press. This poster, to commemorate the 150th Aniversary of Wilton’s Music Hall, is available for purchase along with other letterpress printed items via [...]

Grafica Fildalga – Letterpress printers in São Paulo, Brazil

Widely shared on Twitter, this movie is just too wonderful not to feature on my Blog. Filmed by  Cool Hunting Video, it shows Grafica Fidalga, a trio of letterpress printers in São Paulo, Brazil, who print wood type posters on a 1929 German cylinder printing press.
